Witham carnival backed by housebuilder’s donation

Witham’s annual carnival returned this year after a gap of two years, thanks to support from Bellway and other businesses.

The housebuilder, which is building new homes in Witham, has donated £500 towards the event, which took place this summer.

This was the town’s 91st carnival, following the 90th event back in 2019. Events in 2020 and 2021 were not able to happen due to the Covid pandemic.

Carnival organiser Suzanne Goody said: “We had many local groups involved in this year’s carnival as we made our big comeback.

“In 2019, we marked our 90th carnival and we had an incredible number of local people take part. However, after the pandemic, we found it difficult to get going again just like other non-profit organisations run by volunteers.

“It is with the support of the council and businesses such as Bellway that we have been able to restart our carnival.

“On behalf of Witham Carnival, I would like to thank Bellway for this generous donation because we were able to use these funds in an act which saw the local community showcase its skills and spirit.”

Sales Director of Bellway Essex, Jenny Walker, said: “The carnival has brought many people in Witham together and that is why we contributed funds to help the event come back this year.

“Our aim is to play an active part in the local community where we are building new homes, to benefit new and existing residents, and helping to enable the return of events such as Witham Carnival is one way in which we can do this.

“We are committed to meeting the local need for new housing in the area, and are currently in the process of delivering more than 500 new homes across three developments in Witham. We look forward to continuing our support for the town as these new communities take shape.”

Bellway Essex is building new homes at Rivenhall Park, off Forest Road, with new homes coming soon at New Gimson Place, off River View. All the homes at Bluebells, off Rickstones Road, have been sold.
