Prestigious industry award won by Bellway site manager in Stowmarket

The high quality of the work delivered by the site manager at Bellway’s Pinewood Grange development in Stowmarket has been recognised with a prestigious national award.

Harry Bell, 32, who lives in the town, won a Quality Award this year in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition and is one of just 449 site managers from across the UK to receive the accolade. Ten per cent of the winners were Bellway site managers.

Senior Site Manager Harry was selected from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers whose sites have been inspected by the NHBC over the past year, placing him among an elite group within the industry.

As a Quality Award winner, Harry is automatically entered into the next stage of the competition – the NHBC’s Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards, which will be awarded later in the year.

The NHBC runs the Pride in the Job awards annually and every site registered with them is automatically entered into the competition. Each site manager is judged on a wide range of aspects of their work including attention to detail, leadership, technical expertise and health and safety.

This is the first Pride in the Job award which Harry has won.

He said: “It is a great feeling to have won the Pride in the Job award. I have been working hard on this project for a few years. It is a proud moment for me and the team. I am very proud of myself. My immediate goal is to progress further in the Pride in the Job competition and my future goals will be to progress to Contracts Manager.”

Harry has worked in the construction industry for the last decade. Before joining Bellway, he started as a trainee construction manager and later took on roles as an assistant site manager and eventually site manager. During this period, Harry pursued a Construction Management degree at the University of Essex through day release. In August 2021, Harry joined Bellway as a Senior Site Manager at Pinewood Grange, where he has been working ever since.

Harry added: “My late father got me into construction, having worked in the industry himself. I enjoyed listening to my dad talk and tell me about his day, the machinery used and the exciting variety in the construction industry. The mix of the office environment and being outside appealed to me.”

Dean Takkou, Construction Director for Bellway Eastern Counties, said: “The Pride in the Job Quality Awards are rightly held in high regard nationally as everyone in the industry knows just how hard it is to win this accolade.

“The judging is incredibly rigorous, which means that winning the award is testament to the quality of the homes being built at Pinewood Grange.

“I would like to congratulate Harry and every member of his fabulous site team for their achievement and wish them all the best for the next stage of the competition in the autumn.”

Bellway is building a selection of two, three and four-bedroom homes at Pinewood Grange.
