Homebuilder’s donation helps fund memorial for former captain at Romsley and Hunnington Cricket Club

A memorial has been created to honour the Vice Captain of Romsley and Hunnington Cricket Club 2nd XI, who died earlier this year.

David Quigley, 37 years old, who had been involved with the club for seven years, passed away in February following a battle with cancer.

A £500 donation from local homebuilder Bellway has helped pay for a memorial bench to be installed at the club in his memory, with the rest of the money being used to update the area in front of the pavilion at the cricket ground.

Stuart Houlder-Jarvis, Club Secretary of Romsley and Hunnington Cricket Club said: “The donation we gratefully received from Bellway further supplemented a grant from the England and Wales Cricket Board. This funding supported our desire to create a more welcoming environment for players, family and guests in front of our cricket pavilion.

“The work completed created a great social space for young families and those enjoying a post-game catch up. Furthermore, the work plan was added to with a memorial bench and foundations, for a former player and family member, David Quigley, who we sadly lost to cancer in early 2024.

“Particularly poignantly, David was the committee member at RHCC who first reached out from the club to forge links with the staff at Bellway - and it is therefore fitting that the relationship supported a lasting memorial to him.”

Bellway is currently building its new Harvino development across the road from the cricket club on the former Blue Bird Toffee factory site in Hunnington.

Sales Manager for Bellway West Midlands, Angela Nurse, said: “We very much feel that the cricket club is our close neighbour as we are building our new development so near to the ground.

“It is fitting that our donation has contributed to the memorial for David, and we are pleased that the £500 was also able to provide improvements for the changing rooms too.”
