Homebuilder helps church to support families in Peterborough

Bellway is working with St Luke’s Church in Peterborough to support struggling families this winter.

The homebuilder’s Eastern Counties division, which is building new homes at Elder Brook in Peterborough and Stilton Gate in Stilton, donated bags full of non-perishable food items and essential supplies to the church’s Food Hub and volunteered to help distribute them.

The Food Hub, which is based at the church in Benyon Grove, Orton Malborne, provides weekly emergency food supplies to families in need.

Kirstie Lancaster and Lucy Wendt, from the company’s divisional head office in Cambourne, dropped off the supplies and helped distributing them to families last month.

Joan Wayland, the organiser of the food hub at St Luke’s Church, said: “The donation of food received from staff at Bellway has been a welcome addition to our stocks which are depleted weekly by the volume of people in need that visit us.

“We rely on such donations as it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with demand. The food hub provides essential items to an average of 20 families a week, we expect this number to grow as the current cost of living crisis continues.

“With increasing numbers attending the food hub more donations of food and money will be required. So, the donations of food and shopping bags from Bellway have been a welcome boost to our ever diminishing stocks.

“Kirstie and Lucy were also a great asset to our team of volunteers. It would be a pleasure to welcome them back for a visit anytime.”

Phil Standen, Managing Director of Bellway Eastern Counties, said: “This winter has been particularly hard for families on lower incomes due to the rise in the cost of living. So, we are keen to do what we can to support them through these tough times.

“Employees at our head office in Cambourne have donated items for the Food Hub and were keen to play their part in helping families who are most in need.

“Kirstie and Lucy were pleased to be able to spend time working with the Food Hub organisers to help distribute food parcels. This donation is part of our commitment to play a positive role within communities where we are providing high-quality new housing for people.”

Bellway building 128 homes at Elder Brook, off Oundle Road, and 90 homes at Stilton Gate, off North Street, Stilton. These developments will include a total of 51 affordable homes available for local people through low-cost rent or shared ownership.
