Daisy Appeal fundraiser helps children’s bereavement charity in Newark-on-Trent
A charity that helps grieving children in Newark-on-Trent held its annual Daisy Appeal to raise money for its work and to honour loved ones who have died.
The fundraiser, held in the grounds of Newark Castle on Saturday (29 June), was sponsored by local homebuilder Bellway, which made a donation of £500 to the Children’s Bereavement Centre towards the running of the event.
The charity, based in Kings Road, helps children aged between three and 18 years old and their parents or carers who have been affected by the death or terminal illness of someone who is important to them.
The Daisy Appeal gave supporters a chance to donate money for a wooden daisy in memory of a loved one which they could personalise with pictures or words. The daisies went on display to create a field of flowers before being taken home at the end of the day.
Fundraising Manager from the Children’s Bereavement Centre, Rachel Wilson said: “This is a hugely important event for the Children’s Bereavement Centre as it gives people the opportunity to honour and celebrate the lives of lost loved ones by donating for a daisy in their memory.
“The Meadow of Memories Exhibit gives people the chance to stand alongside others, to remember and reflect together. The support from Bellway means that more of the funds raised from the daisy donations can be channelled into providing essential support for bereaved children and young people through one of the most devastating times in their lives, the death of someone they love.
“All our services are offered free of charge which means we rely heavily on events and campaigns and the generosity of the local community to support us. So on behalf of all the team at the charity and the families, we’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to Bellway”.
The housebuilder’s Sales Manager Adam Champion and Sales Advisor Lana Moss also volunteered on the day before the event by ‘planting’ the daisies and helping the charity get ready to welcome the public.
Adam Champion, Sales Manager for Bellway East Midlands, said: “This area is very fortunate to have the Children’s Bereavement Centre here as it supports and helps children and young people at a very distressing and difficult time in their lives. Its services including play therapy and one-to-one bereavement support sessions all play an important role in helping them to cope and look after their wellbeing and mental health.
“Supporting the Daisy Appeal means a lot to me, and I found the experience of volunteering to help set up this special event very moving.”
The wooden daisies were all handmade by members of the Men in Sheds group in nearby Collingham with wood provided by Burghley Bespoke Interiors. The group made 200 daisies for the event.
Bellway is currently building homes in Newark-on-Trent, at The Foresters at Middlebeck.
