Construction work passes halfway stage at Wellfield Rise in Wingate
Bellway Durham has now completed half of the homes at a new development in Wingate, which will feature 20 acres of green open space when completed.
The developer is building 250 two, three and four-bedroom homes at Wellfield Rise, off Wellfield Road in the village.
The housebuilder has finished 138 of the properties, with all but four of these being occupied by new residents. A total of 147 homes have been sold.
The development covers nearly 46 acres and will incorporate 20 acres of open space to the south. There will also be a green corridor through the northern part of the site and improved pedestrian and cycle links to the neighbouring Hart to Haswell Walkway, which lies along the route of a dismantled railway.
Hayley Teasdale, Sales Manager for Bellway Durham, said: “Construction is progressing well at Wellfield Rise, and we remain on track to finish building work at the development by 2025. As more homes are completed and more people move in, we are seeing the formation of a really close-knit community where people get together and neighbours look out for each other.
“Earlier in the year, we organised a dog walk around the country paths that surround the development and it was a tremendous success. The fact that lots of owners and their dogs tuned up to enjoy the event was a perfect example of the sense of community that already exists at Wellfield Rise.

The 250 homes being built at Wellfield Rise comprise 225 properties for private sale and 25 affordable homes for local people, including 19 for sale at a discount to market value and six available on a low-cost rent basis. Construction work started on site in 2020 and is expected to be finished by 2025.
Local couple Kim and Andrew Harker bought a home at Wellfield Rise through the Discount Market Value (DMV) scheme, purchasing it for 70 per cent of its open market value to leave themselves mortgage-free.
Kim, 57, who has retired from her work at a private children’s home, and Andrew, 59, a service engineer, downsized from their detached house in Willington to a three-bedroom semi-detached house at Wellfield Rise.
Andrew said: “The quality of life here couldn’t be better, and this will be our forever home. We are planning our future and making sure we can maintain the house. We have ended up with more money in the bank and a house we can afford and staying in County Durham and I’m proud that we can keep the house for local people.”
Fellow residents Rebecca Siddle, 26, and Adam Scott, 24, bought their first home at Wellfield Rise - in the village where Rebecca has lived all her life.
The couple moved into a new three-bedroom semi-detached house at the development in June and their daughter Sophia was born just two weeks later.
Rebecca said: “I feel very fortunate to get a house in the village I grew up in. I already have many lovely memories here, and I cannot wait to recreate them with Sophia as she grows up.
“The best part is that everybody knows each other in Wingate. We speak a lot more than just saying hello when we run into somebody here, because we’ve known each other all our lives.”
