Bellway wins HR Excellence in Leadership award

North East based housebuilder, Bellway, has won the prize for leadership at an awards event which celebrates best practice among human resources and development (HR&D) teams in the North East.

The company, which began as a family business in the North East in 1946 and is one of the region’s largest employers, with its head office in Woolsington, was presented with the Excellence in Leadership award at a ceremony held at The Fed in Gateshead.

The award was made in recognition of Bellway’s Better with Bellway sustainability strategy, which was launched last year and touches on every aspect of the business, with a focus on putting people and the planet first.

The North East HR&D awards, which are run by media outlets including the Newcastle Chronicle, The Journal, Chronicle Live and Teesside Live, aim to raise the profile of the human resources and development profession in the North East region.

Bellway Group HR Director Heidi Khoshtaghaza, who collected the award, said: “We see ourselves very much as leaders in this industry, so it means a great deal to be awarded the Excellence in Leadership award.

“Our sustainability strategy goes beyond our own employees, encompassing an approach that cares about people in every area that is touched by our company activities, and that includes the supply chain, our customers and the communities that eventually form as a result of the developments we create.

“We’re also committed to carbon reduction and helping lead the industry towards a more sustainable future for people and the planet.”

Bellway was also a finalist in the Excellence in Inclusivity and Diversity category at the awards.

One of Bellway’s key aims within the Better with Bellway strategy is for the company to be an Employer of Choice, and to do this it invested in a range of measures covering people development, inclusivity and diversity, mental health, and engagement.

A new Learning and Development/Organisational Development (L&D/OD) team was set up within the national head office in Newcastle in October 2021, led by Heidi. The team has developed a series of development programmes for people at all levels in the business and has focused on inclusivity in its hiring training.

Heidi said: “The team has worked with energy, passion and drive to achieve and exceed our targets on employee satisfaction and inclusion.

“We focus on our people at all levels in the business to make sure that everyone can achieve their potential.”
