Bellway wins award for driving supply chain sustainability

Bellway has won an industry award in recognition of its efforts to increase the sustainability of its supply chain.

The national housebuilder received the Partner Award for Supply Chain Engagement from the Supply Chain Sustainability School.

The award was announced as part of the Net Zero Summit 2023, which was hosted by the School in September.

Bellway’s award recognises the company’s success in driving the School’s learning and training to their supply chain, and its commitment to upskilling them in a range of sustainability issues – from reducing carbon and waste to combatting modern slavery.

As part of its Better with Bellway sustainability strategy, the company set an initial target for 75 per cent of its key 100 group suppliers to reach Gold level membership with the School – the highest level achievable.

Currently around 58 per cent of Bellway’s top 100 supply chain are at Gold level but Bellway expect to continue to improve on that. The longer term target is to increase the percentage to 85% of the top 100 suppliers and furthermore engage the whole supply chain including all suppliers and subcontractors with the School.

Adrian Hill, Bellway’s Group Head of Procurement, said: “Sustainability has always been at the forefront of the Better with Bellway strategy and it is pleasing that the progress we have made in this area has been recognised with this award from the School.

“However, this is only the start of the journey. It is essential that all of our products and materials are sourced in a sustainable manner and we will continue to encourage our partners to sign up to the School scheme to help them improve their sustainability.”

Part-funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the Supply Chain Sustainability School provides a free learning environment to upskill those who work – or are seeking to work – in the building industry.

Sophie Coyle, Partner Relations and Sector Manager (Homes) for the School, said: “Bellway are deserving winners of the Supply Chain Engagement Award, showing commitment to upskilling their supply chain partners over the past 12 months in line with their own sustainability goals and targets.

“By setting an ambitious target for 75% of their key 100 group suppliers to achieve ‘gold’ level with the School, they have successfully encouraged their supply chain to actively use the training, develop their knowledge and skills, and ultimately become more sustainable businesses.

“The School’s vision is of an industry where everyone has the skills and knowledge to deliver projects sustainably, and Bellway’s work on upskilling their suppliers demonstrates best practice in driving the learning through the value chain.”
