Bellway supports Down’s Syndrome Association work programme in Wales

A Cardiff-based housebuilder has donated £500 to the Down’s Syndrome Association to help support its pioneering employment programme in Wales.

Bellway Wales has made the contribution to the national charity to help fund its WorkFit initiative, which provides sustainable work opportunities for people who have Down’s syndrome. The scheme also provides bespoke training and support to employees through the programme.

This is not the first time that Bellway Wales has supported the WorkFit programme as it donated £250 towards the initiative in 2019.

Sheelagh Clayton, Head of Fundraising and Membership at the Down’s Syndrome Association, said: “Support from companies for the work of the Down’s Syndrome Association is vital as it enables us to provide services and programmes for thousands of people who have Down’s syndrome, their families, and carers.

“Bellway Wales has supported the DSA for several years, and we greatly value their recent donation for our work.”

WorkFit matches jobseekers who have Down’s syndrome with employers who have jobs to offer. A dedicated WorkFit Officer supports jobseekers and employers at all stages of the process. WorkFit listens to the business needs of employers and matches them to the hopes and ambitions of jobseekers, supporting them to be more independent, learn new skills, meet new people, earn money and increase their self-esteem. WorkFit offers candidates free support through the recruitment and selection process ensuring a smooth transition from education into employment.

The Down’s Syndrome Association is committed to improving quality of life for people who have Down’s syndrome, promoting their right to be included in society on a full and equal basis with others.

Simon Hughes, Development Manager at Bellway Wales, said: “As a socially responsible housebuilder, we see it as a vital part of our role in the local community to support organisations and charities which improve the lives of people. The Down’s Syndrome Association does a huge amount of incredible work in supporting people with Down’s syndrome and their families.

“WorkFit is a brilliant initiative as it listens to the business needs of employers and works to match them to the hopes and ambitions of jobseekers, supporting them to be more independent, learn new skills, meet new people, earn money and increase their self-esteem. We have formed a great relationship with the Down’s Syndrome Association and hope to be able to continue to support its valuable work in the future.”
