Bellway part funds new sustainable bus service in Ryton

A new bus service promoting sustainable travel between Ryton and Blaydon has been part-funded by Bellway North East.

As part of the planning agreement for the construction of 283 new homes off Cushy Cow Lane in Ryton, the housebuilder is making a substantial contribution towards the Go North East R2 service.

The service, which started in July, operates using low-emission buses featuring a wheelchair bay, free wi-fi and ‘next stop’ audio-visual announcements. It partially replaced the R1 service between Ryton and Blaydon, in so doing helping to maintain local bus links for the wider community.

The R2 runs through Ryton every 30 minutes. It starts at Woodside Lane, then stops in Cushy Cow Lane near the entrance to Bellway’s Summerhill View development and to Stargate Meadows by Ashberry Homes, which is part of the Bellway Group. It also calls at Stargate Lane and then stops in Blaydon.

Passengers who want to travel to the Metrocentre in Gateshead can connect with the number 10 bus, while travel to Newcastle city centre is accessed through the number 12 service.

The route will be reviewed annually with proposals to serve the wider development once the link road between Cushy Cow Lane and Woodside Lane is completed. Further options to extend the route will continue to be explored.

Dan Graham, Commercial Development Manager at Go North East, said: “We are delighted to be working closely with partners to introduce the new R2 bus service, running to and from new housing developments Summerhill View and Stargate Meadows, and at Woodside Gardens where Taylor Wimpey has also contributed to the new route.

“Using the R2 bus is a great environmentally friendly and sustainable way of travelling into Blaydon and we offer quick and easy connections to the Metrocentre and Newcastle on our 10 and 12 service.”

Bellway is currently building two, three and four-bedroom new properties at Summerhill View, off Cushy Cow Lane, while Ashberry Homes, which is part of Bellway Group, is building three and four-bedroom houses at neighbouring Stargate Meadows.

Emma Chesterton, Sales Director at Bellway North East, said: “At Bellway, we aim not only to provide much-needed new housing but also to have a positive impact on the daily lives of people who reside in the areas where we build. We are very happy to provide funding towards this new bus service which is up and running and serving residents new and old alike.

“Carbon reduction is a key component of our Better with Bellway strategy, which has been devised to improve sustainability. Our support of this service, which enables people to leave their cars at home and use low-emission bus transport instead, dovetails nicely with our aim to be kinder to the planet whenever we can.”
