Bellway London sets up fund to support community projects at Barking Riverside

Thousands of pounds worth of funding is on offer to groups and individuals at Barking Riverside to create grassroots community projects.

Bellway London – which is building hundreds of new homes within this major regeneration project on the site of the former Barking Power Station – has launched the Barking Riverside Community Fund to back projects which connect and support people living there.

The homebuilder is offering £4,750 in total, and each project can receive up to £1,000.

Applications can come from community groups, schools, and charities as well as individual residents of Barking and Dagenham who are aged 18 or over.

Managing Director of Bellway London’s Barking Project Team David Burns said: “Our Community Fund is part of our commitment to supporting the Barking Riverside neighbourhood and its residents. It aims to encourage events and activities that will bring people together in a wide variety of ways.

"That could be through health and wellbeing activities, arts and culture, or connecting with nature for example, but there are many possibilities we would consider, and we are looking forward to hearing from our community regarding the projects they are passionate about.

“The money can be used for a project that is already up-and-running or for something new, or even a one-off event.

“We want to hear from groups and individuals in the area who would make good use of a grant to make something wonderful and memorable happen in the community.”

The projects can be indoor, outdoor, or online and must be for the benefit mainly of Barking Riverside residents. Bellway London is looking for original ideas and creative use of the funding, and priority will be given to projects led by Barking residents.

Examples of projects that might be funded include after-school clubs; photography or art exhibitions that promote community cohesion; coffee mornings and tea dances; befriending schemes; walks and talks; local history events; and literacy, numeracy and digital skills sessions. The possibilities are not limited to these though and Bellway wants to hear about a wide range of ideas.

Activities which are not eligible for a grant from the fund include party political activity, purely commercial ventures, and spending which has already taken place. Capital costs, such as requests which are solely for equipment or items, are not a priority for the fund.

An online Q&A session will be held so that those thinking about applying for a grant can find out more.

Applications opened on Friday 28 February and the final deadline is Saturday 14 June 2025. To register interest in the Q&A session or to apply for a grant, email bpt-enquiries@bellway.co.uk.
