Bellway helps Hednesford pupils get planting

Bellway has helped to create a new allotment area at a primary school in Hednesford to give pupils the chance to learn more about growing vegetables.

The housebuilder, which is delivering new homes at Green Oaks, off Pye Green Road in the town, dug over and slated an area in the grounds of nearby Poppyfield Primary Academy, as well as providing new raised planters and greenhouses.

The allotment will be used for interactive lessons and to grow vegetables for use in the school’s Food Technology room.

Becky Scordis, Headteacher at Poppyfield Primary Academy, said: “We have previously attempted to grow our own food and plants in this area, but the soil is poor, and the space is open to being trodden on and impacted by local wildlife. It is also an extremely difficult area for the children to be able to dig and develop gardening skills.

“Bellway has kindly dug out this area, slated it, and provided a number of planters so that the beds are raised and accessible for all the children. They have also donated greenhouses so that the children can expand on the different plants and crops they grow and protect them from the elements and local nature.

“Developing this space will enable us to build the children’s gardening skills but also support them with their understanding of growth and how different foods are grown and harvested. We are lucky to have our own Food Technology room so the crops that they grow will then be used within baking at school.

“We are extremely grateful for the support from Bellway and would like to thank them for taking the time to support our project to create a valuable learning environment for our pupils.”

Rachel Marner, Sales Manager for Bellway West Midlands, said: “We are very happy to be lending a helping hand to create a space for the children which will allow them to try their hand at growing plants and vegetables.

“It was great to have met Becky to discuss the allotment space and to scope out the needs of the school, which is based so close to our Green Oaks development in town.

“Alongside delivering high-quality homes, one of our key objectives as a company is to ensure that we are having a positive impact on the communities in which we build, and supporting the allotment project at Poppyfield Primary Academy is a good example of the way we can do this.

“We hope that this new space will become a hive of activity and help to enhance the learning of pupils at the school for many years to come.”
