Bellway: "Bungalows are back"

The Yorkshire division of national homebuilder, Bellway Homes has made a claim that may astonish a lot of people – the bungalow is back.

The single storey homes, which reached the peak of their popularity during the War years, fell out of favour with buyers due to their overwhelming association with retirees and a perceived lack of space for growing families.

Bellway has though found that attitudes have changed, especially in Brough, where interest in the bungalows on its Palmer’s Grange development has been higher than for any other house type.

Emma Fitton-Cook, Bellway Yorkshire’s sales manager said: “There’s something just so appealing about bungalows. They look perfect and have the feeling of everything being easy to manage and cheap to run; and judging by the interest in them here in Brough people are really keen to call one home.”

This local interest is reflected nationally, with Housing Futures finding that over a fifth of people said they were looking to move into a bungalow in the next five years. Meanwhile, Rightmove discovered in 2021 that the average price of a bungalow had risen by 10.5 per cent in comparison to just 6.3 per cent for other types of home.

“Bungalows are still incredibly popular around the world – especially in the USA and Australia – and it’s great to see them making a come back here,” added Emma. “I really can’t see any reason why they can’t become as popular as they were back in the 1920s and 30s.”

Forming part of the £200million Brough South project on the northern banks of the Humber Estuary, Bellway’s 320-home Palmer’s Grange development features a wide mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom properties.

Available from £234,995, the three bungalows at Palmer’s Grange feature a stylish kitchen/dining area, and a bright living room to the rear of the home that has French doors leading onto a south facing garden. There’s also a contemporary family bathroom and two spacious bedrooms.
