Bellway builds bonds between footballing rivals

Renowned for building new homes and communities, Bellway Homes has switched its attention to grassroots football and is now building bonds between rival teams in the Northern Counties East League.

The housebuilder, which sponsors players at both Retford FC and Swallownest, decided to mark the first meeting of the two sides since the sponsorship began by being match sponsor for a game jokingly billed as the Battle of Bellway.

Melanie Smith, Bellway Yorkshire’s sales director, said: “We like to support community projects in towns where we’re building and in both Retford and Swallownest we’ve become involved with the local football teams. When we realised they play in the same league we were delighted – the only issue, of course, was who to support when they clashed on Saturday afternoon.”

The match, which ended in a 3-0 win for Retford, saw Bellway sponsor striker, Will Montero and goalkeeper, Zac Walker from Swallownest, and two of Retford’s most versatile players – defender and midfielder, Alex Boyd and striker and midfielder, Kyle Simpson.

“The Battle of Bellway billing really made us all laugh,” added Melanie. “But of course, now that the game’s got its name we really want it to grow as big as the Old Firm in Scotland, El Classico in Spain or any of the bit city rivalries here in England!”

Bellway has new developments in both Retford and Swallownest.

Longholme Park in Retford is a 60-home development on the outskirts of the Nottinghamshire town, which comprises an exclusive selection of four and five-bedroom family homes. Prices begin at £294,995 for a four-bedroom detached home.

Being built on a 3.9-acre site to the east of Park Hill Farm, Millstone Park in Swallownest will feature 99 new homes once complete. Comprising a mix of three-bedroom townhouses, three-bedroom detached and semi-detached homes, and four-bedroom detached properties, prices range from £171,995 to £397,995.
