Westerhope homebuilder helps neighbouring food redistribution charity

A food redistribution charity based in Westerhope – which supplies community organisations across the North East – has been given a helping hand from a local housebuilder.

Ashberry Homes, which is building new homes at Church View, off Stamfordham Road in Westerhope, has given £500 to FareShare North East towards the costs involved in running its warehouse, which lies less than a mile down the road from the development.

FareHare North East collects surplus food items from both retailers and producers, which it then supplies to over 200 groups – including community cafes, shelters, schools, foodbanks and community centres – across the North East.

Over 100 volunteers work in the warehouse in Stamfordham Road every week. Their efforts provided over four million meals to as many as 34,200 people in 2021 alone – and the number of people who rely on FareShare has continued to grow this year.

Katie Bates, Development Manager of FareShare North East, said: “We have seen a huge increase in the demand for our service as people in the region try and cope with the rise in the cost of living.

“Donations like this are so important in allowing us to continue our core work of getting food to the groups and people who need it, so we are hugely appreciative of Ashberry Homes' support of our work.

“This donation will go towards the running costs of our busy warehouse in Westerhope which delivers enough food to make thousands of meals each week. It will have a real and positive impact on our work within the Newcastle area.”

Oliver Wray, Sales Manager for Ashberry Homes, said: “FareShare North East plays an indispensable role in feeding thousands of families in the area every year and the charity’s warehouse is close to our Church View development in Westerhope, so we were keen to contribute funds towards its work.

“Supporting organisations which help people in the areas where we are building new homes is an important part of our role within local communities. We are pleased our donation will help FareShare with the costs of running the warehouse, which is vital for the distribution of food to those in need.”

Ashberry Homes is currently building 184 new homes at Church View, including 28 affordable homes available for local people through shared ownership or low-cost rent. The development forms the second phase of the East Middle Callerton neighbourhood, which is set to deliver around 600 homes – and is part of the wider Callerton Park consortium scheme, planned to eventually comprise around 3,000 homes on sites to the west of Newcastle.
