Springstead Village housebuilders sponsor Cambridge Half Marathon
The housebuilders delivering a new development in Cherry Hinton have gone the extra mile by sponsoring this year’s Cambridge Half Marathon.
Bellway and Latimer, the development arm of affordable homes provider Clarion Housing Group, are building Springstead Village, off Cherry Hinton Road – a new development including 1,200 new homes, new schools, a local centre, recreation areas, allotments and public open spaces.
The Bellway Latimer joint venture sponsored the half marathon, which saw up to 16,000 runners hit the streets of Cambridge on Sunday (3 March).
At the Springstead Village marquee within the event village, Bellway Sales Manager Natalie Capel and Sales Advisor Marley Edwards handed out free water bottles and tote bags.
Lucie Williams, an assistant accountant, who works for Bellway at the Springstead Village project office, and her partner Phil Harris, a field manager at an engineering firm, were chosen to fill the two race places the Bellway Latimer joint venture was given as part of the sponsorship deal.
Lucie, 28, who lives with Phil in St Ives, said: “We only got six weeks’ notice that we were running and we had to try to beat our time for the previous year’s half marathon, when we ran two hours 17 minutes after six months of preparation.
“We ran together and amazingly managed to beat our 2023 time by 13 minutes so we were very happy. Right at the end, Phil sprinted because he did not want to finish behind a man dressed as an ice cream but I had nothing left in my legs so accepted my fate. It was a brilliant day out and we want to sign up for next year so we can try to get our time under two hours.”
Adam Moffat, Race Director, from Cambridge Half Marathon, said: “We are so happy to have worked with Bellway Latimer for the first time this year. With over 16,000 entrants, Bellway supported each of our athletes to reach their goal and complete 13.1 miles through the beautiful Cambridge city centre.”
Ulrich van Eck, Project Director for the Bellway Latimer joint venture, said: “The Cambridge Half Marathon is an incredible event which attracts runners from far and wide and also gives local people a chance to run and have a superb day out. We want to play a positive part in the life of this fantastic city so were proud to play our part in helping the race take place.
“It was great to see Lucie and her partner show their grit and determination by not only tackling the 13-mile route but also by beating their previous year’s time. They represented the company in style and thoroughly enjoyed being among the thousands and thousands of people who turned out to make this day a very special one.”
