Shrewsbury residents hold ‘Carols on the Green’ singalong

Residents at Bellway’s Copthorne Keep development in Shrewsbury got into the festive spirit by organising a ‘Carols on the Green’ event.

Members of Copthorne Keep Community Group staged the event, inviting their neighbours to come along to a Christmas singalong on Friday 23 December.

The event began at 6pm and many of the families living on the site gathered on the communal green to listen to the carols and to join in with the merrymaking.

Bellway West Midlands – which is building the new homes at the development, on the site of the former Copthorne Barracks – donated mince pies, mulled wine and mulled apple juice to add to the Christmas cheer.

Lyn Pendle, secretary of Copthorne Keep Community Group and one of the organisers of ‘Carols on the Green’, said: “We wanted to organise this event to once again try to bring the Copthorne Keep community together. We have had a successful Halloween event which lots of children attended dressed in many scary outfits, as well as the much-admired poppy display on the soldiers at the front of the estate.

“Over 40 people turned up in the drizzle to sing Christmas Carols, eat mince pies, drink mulled wine and apple juice. We were greatly heartened by the response to the event especially as several new residents came along. The event was staged next to the new notice board which was beautifully lit up with fairy lights for the occasion.

“Thanks once again to Bellway for its support in providing mince pies and mulled wine to help improve our singing and make the event a success.”

Copthorne Keep Community Group also held a Platinum Jubilee picnic in June, which featured a range of festivities including music, food and drink and various Jubilee-themed games. The group previously staged a community barbecue on the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2021 on the communal green and, before that, a coffee morning on the site in the spring.

Marie Richards, Sales Director for Bellway West Midlands, said: “This was a really lovely event and it was great to see so many of the residents come together at this special time of the year to join in with all the festive fun. Copthorne Keep Community Group is very active within the development and helps keep people connected with each other.

“This evening get-together was the latest in a number of events set up by the group which we have supported. We were pleased to contribute towards the cost of the coffee morning and the Bank Holiday barbecue and to donate £150 worth of book tokens and £50 of vouchers as prizes for the Platinum Jubilee picnic.

“These events really help to foster a community spirit at Copthorne Keep, where the residents have formed a vibrant new neighbourhood which already has a very strong local identity.”

There’s currently a selection of three and four-bedroom homes available to reserve at Copthorne Keep, with prices starting at £299,995 and £470,000 respectively.
