Local children celebrate 'Don't Step on a Bee Day' in Wantage

To celebrate national ‘Don’t Step on a Bee Day’, which is on Monday 10th July, a group of local school children visited Bellway’s development, Yellow Fields in Wantage for a fun-filled, bee-inspired workshop. During the exciting event, the children were joined by Beekeeper Amy from Ridgeway Bees who led an interactive class about bees, hives and the importance of protecting these incredible insects.

The children from Wantage Primary Academy attended the local development accompanied by their teacher and a parent, and enjoyed an educational workshop by Amy in the garden of the Yellow Fields show home. During the event, Amy spoke about where honey comes from, how to care for the bees, their hives and their favourite plants, and even brought some honey for the children to taste. They were then able to try on bee suits whilst learning what being a beekeeper involves and made a bee bomb, a wildflower seedball, to plant at home.

Leah Basilone, Principal at Wantage Primary Academy, comments: “This has been such a fascinating workshop for the children and they have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Amy was wonderfully engaging and the children learnt some very important facts about bees which we will be sharing with the wider school. We were delighted to be invited to Yellow Fields and I think the children will remember this special day for a long time.”

Ridgeway Bees is a family business based in Wantage which has over 20 strong hives across several apiaries, runs education programmes, and sells surplus honey, handmade beeswax and honey infused products. Amy at Ridgeway Bees comments: “It was fantastic to see how engaged the children were during our workshop – it’s always a delight to see young people interested in the safety and protection of bees. They particularly enjoyed wearing the bee suits which is one of our favourite parts of the day. Protecting bees is absolutely vital so it’s great to see companies like Bellway promoting events like this.”

Emma Russell, Sales Director at Bellway comments: “At our developments, we aim to create and enhance ecological habitats to protect the wildlife. It was fantastic to organise this event and learn more about what we can do to help. It was lovely to invite the local children to Yellow Fields and Amy was brilliant, leading an unforgettable experience for all involved.”
