Housebuilder donates food parcels to Coventry Foodbank

Coventry Foodbank has been able to hand out extra food parcels thanks to a donation from local housebuilder Bellway.

Bellway South Midlands, which has its regional head office in Coventry, delivered 226.9 kilograms of food to the foodbank at The Halo Centre, Progress Way, Binley.

The food was funded by a £500 donation from Bellway South Midlands, plus donations from members of the head office team.

The donation will provide emergency food parcels for 10 families or 20 single people.

Dee Ward, Project Manager at Coventry Foodbank, said: “On behalf of Coventry Foodbank, I want to thank Bellway for their kind food donation which will go a long way in helping 10 families or 20 single people who turn to us in times of need.

“In the first six months of 2023 we have fed over 15,500 people and provided over 46,500 meals for children and adults across Coventry.

“We’re expecting demand to reach an all time during the summer holidays as more parents struggle to put food on their tables – and in order to support the additional families and individuals needing our help this summer we rely on donations to support those struggling.

“To have the support of a housebuilder like Bellway during this period is a massive help to us – any donation will make a big difference to who we can help.”

Coventry Foodbank was set up in January 2011 by four churches and now has 14 distribution centres as well as a central warehouse in the city.

Dee said: “To keep up with demand, we are open six days a week from Monday to Saturday and run on a referral basis where people can be referred to us with a voucher. The voucher is then redeemed at one of our centres for a three-day emergency parcel.”

Angela Nurse, Head of Sales at Bellway South Midlands, said: “In addition to providing new housing across South Midlands, including at our Jubilee Green development in Coventry, we want to support local charities and initiatives. An important part of our company ethos is to help the communities in which we are delivering our homes.

“It is pleasing to know that our donation will help 10 families or 20 individuals who may otherwise go hungry and we are very happy to support such a worthwhile and beneficial organisation.”

People can support the foodbank by funding a shopping list of items online, making a monthly donation or donating items at their local supermarket.
