Dedicated Bellway site manager brings home top industry award

The site manager overseeing construction at Bellway’s Parsonage Place development in Maidstone has won a coveted industry award.

Darrell Wilson, 43, from Snodland, is one of just 444 site managers from across the country to receive a Quality Award this year in the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) annual Pride in the Job competition.

He was selected from a pool of more than 8,000 site managers whose sites have been inspected by the NHBC over the past year, placing him among an elite group within the industry.

Along with the other winners, he will now go forward to the next stage of the competition – the NHBC’s Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards this autumn.

Judging for the Pride in the Job awards is a meticulous process, which began for this cohort of site managers in July 2022. As well as undergoing spot checks on the day-to-day running of their site, each site manager is assessed across six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

Pride in the Job was launched over 40 years ago and has since become one of the most prestigious competitions in the construction sector.

This is the second Pride in the Job award which Darrell has won. He has previously secured the award for his work at Bellway’s Bicknor Wood development, also in Maidstone, which he followed up by going on to win the Seal of Excellence.

Darrell followed in the footsteps of his late father, who had a career as a carpenter, by beginning his journey within the industry through a carpentry apprenticeship at 16 years old.

Darrell said: “As a child, I was always very hands-on. I would repair my toolbox and go-kart when they broke so it made sense for me to pursue a career which is just as hands-on.”

His journey as a site manager with Bellway began almost 10 years ago in December 2013. Since then, he has since secured two Pride in the Job awards alongside a Seal of Excellence for his efforts.

He added: “It is a huge achievement to win this award and I was so proud once I found out I had won.

“The team at Parsonage Place played a huge role in the success of this site so far. They are the same team I worked with when I won my first award at Bicknor Wood and they have been just as great since moving to this site.

“The team put a lot of effort into what they do. We have great communication which allows us to consistently produce high-quality work.”

Mike Smith, Construction Director for Bellway Kent, said: “I’d like to congratulate Darrell and all the team at Parsonage Place for working together to secure this sought-after award. Anyone who has been through the judging process understands how thorough it is and how high the bar is set. Site managers will be the first to tell you that this can only be achieved through a team effort, with everyone who works on the development playing their part in delivering homes of the highest quality.”

Bellway is building a selection of two, three and four-bedroom homes and one and two-bedroom apartments at Parsonage Place, off Church Road in Otham.
