Bellway unveils poppy display at Hampton Magna development

A giant poppy display has been unveiled at a new housing development in Hampton Magna to commemorate the village’s war heroes.

Bellway South Midlands has placed the poppies, which have been bought from the Royal British Legion, outside the sales office of its Hampton Trove development off Daly Avenue.

A poppy laying ceremony was held at the site on Armistice Day (Friday 11 November), attended by Councillor Rhonda Treacy-Hales from Budbrooke Parish Council.

The large poppies were laid on two war memorial benches which were installed at the site in May last year to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.

Councillor Treacy-Hales said: “It was a pleasure to visit the Hampton Trove site on Remembrance Day and see the growth of the new development. Bellway’s war memorial benches have been a talking point ever since they were installed.

“It’s really important to remember the village’s military heritage, and the benches and poppy display at the site commemorate that.”

“I’ve lived in Hampton Magna for 18 years and have been a parish councillor since 2015. We’re always keen for new residents to get involved with events that happen in the village.

“Representing Budbrooke Parish Council, and serving as a trustee of our community centre and village hall, enable me to be at the very heart of the community.”

Elaine Brown, Sales Director for Bellway South Midlands, said: “This is such an important time of year and we wanted to play our part in paying homage to our war heroes, as well as doing our bit to support the Royal British Legion. Laying the poppies was extremely moving as we paused to reflect on the service and sacrifices of the Armed Forces. To have Rhonda, a local member of the community, here with us to mark the occasion made it even more special.”

For many years Hampton Magna was the home of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, which was based at Budbrooke Barracks. The barracks were created in 1877 and remained in use until the mid-1960s. In the late 1960s and early 1970s the barracks site was redeveloped into the 20th Century Village of Hampton Magna.

Elaine said: “Hampton Magna has a distinguished military past which makes Hampton Trove a particularly fitting location for this poppy display. Villagers are rightly proud of their strong links to the Armed Forces and this is something that they are understandably keen to share with new residents moving to the village.”
