Bellway London supports Barking and Dagenham Women’s Empowerment Awards

Bellway London’s Barking Project Team supported an event to celebrate the diverse achievements of inspirational women in Barking and Dagenham.

Technical Director Helen Ballam, who works on the housebuilder’s developments at Barking Riverside, was among the female role models invited to present an award at the annual Barking and Dagenham Women’s Empowerment Awards.

The awards are an integral part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Women’s Empowerment Month, which takes place in March each year.

This year’s ceremony was held at Barking Town Hall on Monday 25 March, with winners named in nine different categories.

Helen presented the award for Community Project of the Year to Nassaba Guilba-Fernandes, who was recognised for her work with Elevate Together.

Helen said: “It was a real honour to be invited to attend the annual Barking and Dagenham Women’s Empowerment awards. The ceremony was a truly inspiring event celebrating the important contributions made by women in their local community.

“It was also a pleasure to present Nassaba with her award and I’d like to express my congratulations to everyone who was nominated for an award on the night. Bellway London is striving to achieving greater diversity among its workforce and we are proud to support events such as this which champion gender equality.

“We are also firmly committed to giving back to the local community in Barking and Dagenham. Since starting construction work at Barking Riverside, we have worked closely with local primary and secondary schools, provided funding for local youth charities and donated volunteering hours to support community projects, and we are keen to continue this work in the future.”

Taking place throughout March, Barking and Dagenham Women’s Empowerment Month featured a series of events and activities to celebrate the achievements of women and girls in the borough. This year’s programme included free dance classes for women, a film night, a writing workshop and talks by female authors, drawing on themes celebrated as part of International Women’s Day which took place on Friday 8 March.

Salauoddin Asgharn, Director of Strategy at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, said: “I am thrilled that we continue to pay tribute to the incredible, inspirational women and girls of Barking and Dagenham.

“I am immensely proud of these awards, which honour and celebrate the remarkable contributions of women and girls in our borough and the significant positive influence they have on the lives of others.

“This is out ninth Women’s Empowerment Awards, and I am confident these events will serve as an inspiration for generations to come. My heartfelt congratulations to all our winners and to those who were shortlisted.”

Bellway London is set to deliver over 2,000 homes at Barking Riverside, a major regeneration project which is transforming the former Barking Power Station site into a new residential community of more than 10,000 homes.
