Bellway hosts bake-off competition in Snaith

Bellway marked the opening of two new show homes on its Penny Way development in Snaith in with a bake-off competition that tested the culinary skills of local bakers (and gave the town’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor the arduous task of sampling and picking the winning bake!).

The bakes included everything from a giant Bakewell Tart (served with custard) to a Rose, Pistachio and Lemon cake. There was also a classic Victoria Sponge, various buns and a choice of Triple Chocolate and Lemon cookies, but the winning entry was something a little different – a Melktert.

The traditional South African custard pie, which is topped with cinnamon sugar, was baked by Lucille de Villiers and was chosen as the winner by Town Mayor, James Hollas and Deputy Mayor, Joanne Whiteley on the basis it was absolutely delicious, very morish and they’d tasted nothing like it before.

The runner-up was from first time baker, Angela Dugdale, whose Rose, Pistachio and Lemon cake was judged to be delicate and delicious.

Emma Fitton-Cook, Bellway Yorkshire’s sales manager, said: “The bake-off really did transform the kitchen of our new Goldsmith show home here at Penny Way into how you’d envisage a busy family home. There were delicious smells, lots of cups of tea, delicious cakes, and chat and laughter galore. It really was the perfect Saturday morning.”

The two new show homes – both four bed- detached properties – did very nearly steal the show. With the bakers, special guests and would-be buyers all being impressed by the spacious nature of the Farrier and Goldsmith homes; especially the open plan kitchen dining family spaces, which really do provide the perfect place for entertaining family and friends or just kicking back, relaxing and enjoying some quiet time.

The Howard Street development features a strong mix of different home types and sizes, including two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom homes, and has proved extremely popular with buyers since it was launched late last year. And with the show homes now open for viewing five days a week, the Bellway team expects a rush of sales.

“We took three express mover applications on Saturday alone and the level of interest since the weekend has been enormous,” added Emma. “The only shame is that we couldn’t keep the bakers to keep us stocked up on tasty treats while we show people around!”

The winning baker, Lucille De Villier won a voucher for a baking masterclass at The Grand in York.
